Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)

Strange as it might seem, this blog will also speak a bit of English. Most of our production in the unit about foreign language teaching is being compiled in our group blog, Ghostbusters. I share the group with four other classmates, who are wonderful, and together we have a great time and we learn a lot, I must say. So, this group blog is another reason for my personal blog's "decay".

One thing I love about this degree is that, besides giving me the opportunity to learn a lot of new things, it has also given me names for things I already knew about. I have explained a few examples of that in this blog before, and CLIL is yet another one. I rarely revisit my posts, unless I use them to prepare an exam or an exercise, but this time I read again the post I wrote about my English learning process because I sent it to an old friend. We wrote about our learning process right at the beginning of the unit, when we hadn't started reading on the subject yet. This is a quote from my post:

"... learning to use the language, or learning the language through use. We were placed in real life situations, and grammar or vocabulary became the means, and not the end themselves."

Now, watch the video where Do Coyle defines CLIL in the 21st century on our teacher's web. I quote what she says:

" ... using language to learn and learning to use language through the development of content"

I have found that the blog is a great tool for learning, which didn't exist when I studied my first degree. It helps to make you aware of your learning process and gives you an accurate measure of how much you have learnt. For instance, I had to download all my posts about the first in-school training we completed last year (practicum I), and having written all those posts enabled me to realise that what I had learnt in 5 weeks took 60 pages to summarise in my own words, which I consider an awful lot. That, and being able to cross-reference and organise ideas are the main reasons why I love my blog.
